Commandments

There is something that I think we forget about our
God. He is very serious about us following after
His commandments. In our Wednesday morning
breakfast we have been discussing how to worship
God. I believe one of the ways is by following His
commandments.
Using one of my bible programs I did a quick search on “commandment(s)”. 261 Times that word is used in a verse. I narrowed my search to include “keep commandment(s)” How many times are those two words contained in a verse? 59 times, 51 are in the old testament and 8 in the new testament (NKJV). Do you think it might be important? I know people will say Jesus is all about Love, Grace and Mercy. Which is very true but lets dive in a little and see what he says about His commandments.
The very first use of the word commandment is used in Genesis 26:5. God is telling Abraham how is going to be blessed. Why is God blessing Abraham. Genesis 26:4-5
4 And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; 5 because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”
Interesting we will be blessed if we keep His commandments.
What happens if we disobey His commandments. Its a frightening thing to say the least. God takes it very seriously when we break them. Lets take a look at what he said to Israel if they broke his commandments.
Leviticus 26:14-18
14 ‘But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments,
15 and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant,
16 I also will do this to you:
I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart.
And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.
17 I will set My face against you, and you shall be defeated by your enemies.
Those who hate you shall reign over you, and you shall flee when no one pursues you.
18 ‘And after all this, if you do not obey Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.
OUCH. I think we can say it’s pretty important to follow His commandments. It seems as God is not happy when we do things our own ways.
Last since I know there are those who say that the old testament God can’t be the same God of the new testament also gives us His idea on keeping the commandments.
1 John 2:4-5
4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.
Jesus Said in John 15:9-10
9 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
We are left with this in the last book of the Bible Revelation 22:14 14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.
Remember the next time you are tempted to go against God’s word how much He doesn’t like it. By the way this message is directed at me. I desire to keep God’s commandments but I fail way too many times. Thank heavens for His Love, Grace and Mercy but unfortunately we will have consequences of our disobedience.
My Lord and Savior who I owe everything to; thank You for Your commandments to protect us. I know you have given them to guide us and make us more like You. Thank you for paying my debt.
